Yesterday, I was asked for a list of clients, and I explained that my coaching clients are confidential. As a result, I cannot reveal the names of the individuals, organisations or companies with whom I work with. Confidentiality is the essence of my business ethics, all my clients sign NDAs, and I promise not to use their names or affiliations for any promotional purposes. However, they are free to refer me to their colleagues, family, or friends.
The power of silence
A seed grows with no sound, but a tree falls with a resounding crash. The quiet, persistent process of growth contrasts starkly with the loud, sudden act of destruction. This stark difference illustrates a profound truth: destruction has noise, but creation thrives in silence. True growth happens quietly, away from the spotlight. I think those who seek to lead should embody this principle, nurturing progress through steady, silent effort. Leadership is not about loudly pointing out the flaws and weaknesses of others; it is about fostering growth and strength with patience and humility. Real leaders understand that the most impactful changes often happen quietly, beneath the surface, and their actions speak louder than their words.
““The most basic function of leadership is to tell people what needs to be done and help them do it.””
Smiling is leadership
I think that we need to look out for the three clever stories that makes us move to silence or violence:
“It’s not my fault.”- Victim
“It’s all my fault.”- Villain
“And there’s nothing else I can do.” - Helplessnes
““There are two very powerful things which are always underestimated, silence and smiles. A smile can solve many
problems, and silence can help avoid many problems.””
Saying less than necessary
There was an exchange across a dinner table between a couple of Spartans, and one of them just remained silent. Eventually, the talkative Spartan says, “Are you OK? You have not said anything.” The first Spartan replied, “A stupid person wouldn’t be able to be quiet.”
I think that the ability to remain silent is a mark of not just a very self-disciplined person, but also a very smart and wise person. Remember that there are times when it is unwise to be silent as silence can arouse suspicion. Therefore, silence and saying less than necessary must be practiced with caution, and only applies to the right situations.
